Bed by David Whitehouse
My rating: 3 of 5 stars
"Bed" is not a lazy novel. Author David Whitehouse, a journalist like myself, manages to invent an entire universe around a morbidly obese middle aged man called Malcolm, who keeps time still by not changing a single thing in his life.
What is different about Whitehouse's novel is that it draws attention to what goes on behind the story of a morbidly obese man. I mean, sure you can read about "mountain - people" in the bizarre segment of a sunday tabloid, right? But this book is about his familiy and friends.
"Bed" is not a novel about a morbidly obese man. It shows how a family and a community are affected by the decition of one of its members to never get out of bed ever again for as long as he lives.
